9. Initial Ideas
Who Am I working with?
For the production of the music video I have decided to work with Anthony Wickenden and Deepak Dosanjh.
Who is the Artist you have chosen to make a music video for and what is the song you have chosen to produce?
We have chosen to produce a music video for Mr Probz and the song we have chosen to do is Waves. We chose to do this song because it seem to be quite an easy produce and the lip syncing would be easier for our singer.
What is the name of the artist that you have created?
The name of the artist we have chosen to use is DJ Jamz. This is a conventional name as there are some artist within the house/dance genre have DJ within their name, furthermore some of the artist within the house/dance genre tend create their own backing track, some of the artist even do the vocals to their songs for example Calvin Harris or Mr Probz.
Are you going to have performance and/or narrative in your music video?
Our music is both performance and narrative. We chose to do both because for the type of genre we chose, doing both would work.
General Overview of my music video:
For our music video we plan to film a couple at the beach enjoying their time. Although we decided that we would involve some scenes were they would be arguing, therefore it is a contrast to the happy scenes they will be doing. The reason we chose to do this is because one of the lyrics states "Drifting away" therefore we felt that having an arguing scene would be necessary as it fits to the lyrics.
How does your idea fit your genre?
Our idea fits the genre because a conventional feature of house is the narratives tend to have a story line to it and the majority of the house music videos tend to have couples or females as the main focal point.

8. Theories for production
Eminems' song Without Me has proved to be a good example of post modern text because it has broken the barriers between genre and style within music videos.
Reflection:
By completing this task, I have been able to understand the theories for production and I have been able to understand different features of post modern text and how they can be portrayed in music video such as Without Me. By understand themes such as Homage, Bricolage, Narcissism and etc. I will be able to use these in my own music video if necessary. Furthermore, I believe that these theories would not have any impact on our music video we will not need to use any of the theories.
7. Magazine Advert Analysis
Reflection:
Doing this task has allowed me to look at a magazine cover in my genre and be able to analysis. By doing this it also allows me to take inspiration from these magazine covers so I can construct my own. I can take inspiration from the types of photos to take and the angles that the main focal point of the image should have like the magazine above, it has also allowed me to see who to layout my own magazine cover and what information goes where.
6. Digipak Analysis
Reflection:
By analysing Calvin Harris' digipack it has allowed me to see how to layout my own digipack and what types of features to add to my own, for example the use of bright colours such as the yellow used is very eye catching as it caught my eye instantly when I first saw it. As Calvin Harris is a house/dance artist, which is the genre I plan to do, it will help me to gather some ideas on what to add to my own digipack.
5. Record Labels and Permission
This printscreen shows an email to Epic Records asking for permission to use their song, this would allow me to avoid any copyright strikes to my video and also allow me to avoid any other type of prosecution.
This task has allowed me to understand the difference between major and independent record labels. Furthermore, this task has also allowed to understand the copyright infringement and the importance behind it because if the copyright legislation isn't followed then I could get prosecuted.
Record Label:
ADA Records is an independent british record label founded by Anthony Luongo, Anthony Wickenden and Deepak Dosanjh in 2003. ADA Records mainly produces house/dance songs although they strive to attract other artist from different genres who look to pursue a career in music. ADA Records has worked with many big names in the past, some of the names are Afrojack, Sigma, R3HAB and Jess Glynne, we have worked with these artist early within the careers and they have grown into big named artists. We always look to bring in fresh new faces so we can help them to build their careers in music so they can come out and become big artist that have come out of our label.
4. Genre Research and Audience expectations
The image below shows a Wordle of some conventions relating to the House/Dance genre.
The video above shows what my audience expect to see from house music and from their response they have similar ideas and expectations to what I have about house music.
Reflection:
Reflection:
Reflecting upon my research
of the history of house/Dance music I have found out that what I expected from
house music is what was originally used at the beginning of this genre. I also
learnt that many pop artist have adapted the music and tunes of house music
into their own music, these are artist such as Madonna and Daft Punk.
3. Music Videos Sweeding
Reflection:
The sweding task has allowed us as a group to understand what techniques we can use within our music video and it has allowed to understand how to implement these techniques into our own video to help our music video look the best possible.
Extension Task:
The sweding task has allowed us as a group to understand what techniques we can use within our music video and it has allowed to understand how to implement these techniques into our own video to help our music video look the best possible.
Extension Task:
For this part of the task I will be looking at Countdown by Beyonce and will be talking about a series of editing techniques that have been used. This song won Best editing in the MTV Music video Awards 2012 and therefore this must mean there would be plenty of techniques to talk about.
Split-screen:
The image above shows two print screens of different times in the video whereby split screen is used. This technique can display either the same shot with different actions displayed within or multiple shots of the same action as seen above.

Stop Motion:
The image above shows series of screenshots which display stop motion animation. This technique is used to show a series of still images that are consecutively placed after each other to make them appear to be one big fluid shot. In the video this is seen when Beyonce uses her arms as clock arms as she moves them round clockwise in a circle.
Chroma-Keying:
This is quite an advanced piece of editing whereby the editor would key out certain colours and replace them with another in this case changing from colour to colour as seen above. The screen shot above shows the Beyonce standing on the spot singing whilst the background, costume and makeup changes colours.
Wipe-Transition:
This technique is also quite advanced as it shows Beyonce in the one shot (more specifically the screen shot seen previously on chroma-keying) and then she moves away and as she moves the image behind changes to a different shot of her.
Overall, in this music video it is evident that some of the editing techniques used are very effective although some more complex than others. Some of the techniques go with the music which is why each techniques is very effective, for example the chroma-keying scene, her shoulders move to the beat and as they move the colours in the background and her costume change too. Therefore, by using all the techniques seen and using them effective is the reason why this song won best editing as it provides a spectacular display for viewers.
2. Star Image
How I will use Richard Dyers theory to create my own Star Image.
Firstly and most importantly my artist will need to have good management because this will be the first steps to be a recognized pop star as my star will not be heard of by anyone. This is following Dyers first theory and therefore continuing with the rest my star will need to feature in some magazines, more so the front cover as this would be the first image the people will see. Furthermore my star would need to attend premieres to be noticed on the big stages at fancy premieres. A good way to help my star to become a big pop star would be through the way they dress and therefore my star could follow the latest fashion trend therefore viewers would be able to relate when they see the clothing that my star is wearing. Moreover, my star could have a USP- Unique selling point - by which viewers or general people will know them by, whether it be a different hairstyle or fancy clothing, by doing this it could attract a wider audience pleasing big record labels.
Why is the correct Star Image important?
Getting the correct is important as is it can lead artists in many directions as it would allow them to see the fan base they will generate from the actions they take. By viewing the fan base they can gather, these artist are able to plan who to sell to and what to sell to them as well as understanding the types of songs they would sing and the lyrics they would use. Not getting the correct star image could lead to an artist becoming unpopular and therefore resulting in potentially dying out and having a failed singing career. This type of result could be seen in such artist like Alexandra Burke, coming through the ranks of X Factor, similarly to One Direction, she had made a couple of hit singles including her X Factor winning song and then eventually died out due to poor management and other factors from Dyers theory. Evidently this shows that Dyers theory should be followed to ensure that companies can produce pop stars and have pop performers having the same outcome as Alexandra Burke.
1. Genre Music Video Analysis
I am going to be analyzing the following music video and looking at these specific aspects:
- Props
- Location
- Costume
- Body Language
- Narrative
By analyzing this music and looking for these aspects, it will help me with the planning and production of my music video and allow to gather the correct conventions for a House/Dance music video. The video below is a song called Nobody To Love by Sigma.
2. What is the genre of the music video?
This music video is from the house/dance genre. The evidence to knowing this is firstly one convention that can instantly seen and that is the partly clothed women running on the beach, this convention is seen in many house music videos because the majority of these videos are set in exotic locations that are usually sunny. Another aspect of the music video that allows me to understand that this music video is part of the house genre is the fact that there is no link between the lyrics and the narrative as this is another convention of this genre.
3. Analysis the setting and decor of the music video
The setting and decor in this music video is tropical and set somewhere that is hot. It is evident in the video as the women seen within the video are wearing bikinis and they have a convertible car driving along the coast line. This setting would connote happiness because hot countries are places people want to spend their time, therefore linking to this, I believe that this video fits the genre because some of the music that comes from this genre is upbeat and has a positive vibe and the video has a similar effect because of the sun and the sea.
4. Analysis the costumes of the music video
The costumes within the video are basic and realistic, the director has potentially chosen this to keep the video realistic and allow the audience to relate to it. Furthermore, the costume is also conventional as one the convention related to house music is partly dressed and in the music video plenty of flesh can be see on the women in the clip as they are wearing bikinis for the majority of the beginning.
5. Analysis the props in the music video
There are different props within the video that have been used such as a convertible car, flares, a beach ball, an axe and long boards. All these props reflect the feeling provided by the song and supports the scenes as both girls are having fun with all the props, for example sitting in the convertible car with lit flares showing a rebellious attitude although still having fun. The director could have chosen these props because these are things people would use during the summer when they are trying to enjoy themselves.
6. Analysis the body language and movement in the music video
The body language of the two actress fits the conventions of the genre as this type of music is very upbeat and happy and it is evident within the video that the two women were upbeat and happy because they are enjoying themselves with what they are doing. This is very similar with the movement of the two women as they are moving around quickly and running at many different points, this links and mirrors the music as it is also quick and furthermore the quick movement is another convention seen in house music.
7. Performance
Within the music no artist is seen, this is very conventional to a house/dance song as the majority of artist who create these songs are Dj's and therefore within the music videos they call upon actress to fill the void and provide a performance of some sort. I believe the performance does not add anything but helps support the vibe of the music as the audience can see the two women enjoy themselves on the beach and doing the things that they are doing.
8. Narrative
This music video doesn't have a narrative which is a common convention of house music as their videos don't tend to have narratives to videos, although Calvin Harris' song 'I need your love' could be considered to have a narrative to the song.
Extension:
For the extension task I am going to be doing the same as I did on the previous music video. I am going to be analyzing the following features:
2. What is the genre of the music video?
By analyzing a music video from the house/dance genre, it has allowed me to have a better understand of some of the codes and conventions associated to the genre and therefore will help me plan out what I could personally add to my music video when I come around to producing it.
3. Analysis the setting and decor of the music video

2. What is the genre of the music video?
This music video is from the house/dance genre. The evidence to knowing this is firstly one convention that can instantly seen and that is the partly clothed woman standing on a balcony, this convention is seen in many house music videos because the majority of these videos are set in exotic locations that are usually sunny. Another aspect of the music video that allows me to understand that this music video is part of the house genre is the fact that there is no link between the lyrics and the narrative as this is another convention of this genre.

4. Analysis the costumes of the music video
The costume within the music video is very similar to the previous music video I analysed as there is a half naked women seen within the music video which is a conventional feature of house/dance songs. Furthermore, the costumes used in the video are pieces of clothing that many people can relate too as they are the types of clothing many young people of this generation would wear, by doing this, the director has allowed the music video to be realistic because many people can relate to it.
5. Analysis the props in the music video
The props used in this video are tuned up drag cars and race flags which therefore indicates that this video has a racing like theme behind it. The director potentially chose to use these props because during the summer many people chose to have fun and do many different adventurous activities which can be seen the music as the actress is racing in drag cars. Although, with this specific genre, the music videos do not tend link with the lyrics or the music videos tend to be random therefore this could be the meaning behind this video.
6. Analysis the body language and movement in the music video
The body language of the actress mirrors the music as the movement is fast and upbeat which is a conventional feature of house/dance music because the the genre is generally really upbeat. Furthermore, the thrill of the activity they are doing could reflect the body language of the women and furthermore links to the upbeat vibe of the music.
7. Performance
Although a conventional feature of house/dance music videos is not seeing the artist, in Calvin Harris' music videos he tends to appear in his music videos therefore this goes against general conventions of a house/dance music video. Performance in house music videos help support the vibe within the music video and attract viewers to watch music.
